The London trio known as The Joy Formidable first caught my attention through probably the most predictable song: “Whirring”. But, especially with independent bands, there’s usually a reason one song in particular gains a lot of momentum. Now, I’m not saying it’s their absolute best track, but it’s certainly a quality one and a song I’m sure at least the majority of their fans consider among the band’s best work. With a style that combines hard rock, shoegaze, and some really impressive synth-work, The Joy Formidable have certainly shown themselves to be a force to reckon with. This was further implemented in my mind after catching the band’s set at Bonnaroo 2012; I headed to the tent considering the band’s set to be somewhat of a wildcard, and ended up being completely blown away by the performance and would easily rank it among my top 3 sets of the festival. The band just released two new tracks, from their upcoming album Wolf’s Law, which is scheduled for a January 2013 release. Both these tunes show a bit of a softer side of the UK trio than their other work, but it still remains very faithful stylistically.
