Admittedly, I am not one of those people who has been an avid follower of electronic music throughout my whole life. I didn’t fully delve into it until my later high school years, but ever since it’s been full immersion. I bring this up, because back when I really started getting into this music, Robotic Pirate Monkey was actually one of the first groups I really familiarized myself with. They were small at the time, but their sound really caught my ear and so they’ve been on the radar ever since. It’s really great to observe an artist in that light, as I heard the group’s first official release, Disturbing Pleasant Streets, in 2011 when it first hit the web. Their sound was funky from the beginning, almost always maintaining a dub element, but seeming to float around the realm of more fast-paced electronic music. In more recent releases, and truly evident on this newest single, “Boss”, the group’s sound has settled into the realm of breakbeat, focusing primarily on glitch-hop and electro soul influences. “Boss” really takes Robotic Pirate Monkey’s sound down into a deep range it has yet to reach. Heavy, yet far from overwhelming, the track seems to be almost reminiscent of dubstep’s early years. Free as always.
