Honestly, it doesn’t get much funkier than this. Opiuo is always cooking up some awesome new bouncy beats, and as a result, we finally have their brand new album, Meraki. The Australian producer has been pushing the boundaries of bass music for a long time now, and his influence is not only visible, but also constantly evolving.
The new record is some of the most grooving material we have from Opiuo yet. While he has shed plenty of material upon us in the past via EPs, singles and remixes, Meraki is his sophomore full-length release. The record was released through Opiuo’s own label, Slurp Music.
While each track provides a powerful journey through funk-driven production, the album as a whole offers plenty for any listener whose mouth really gets watering over some live instrumentation. The album’s opening track, “Snorkle”, as well as “Spuzzle Bucket”, get an easing dose of guitar courtesy of Eden Altman. Another Funkadelphia favorite, Russ Liquid (whom you can currently catch on tour with Gramatik), lays down some extra funky trumpet lines on “On Your Side”. Additional production collaboration comes from Beats Antique (“Chubby Putty”), Spoonbill (“Ladies”) and D-Sens (“La Fong”), with Gift of Gab and Syreneyiscreamy laying down vocals on “Life”. The album creates a powerful journey, delving into swinging funked out beats, drawing back into more-relaxed jazzy grooves, and ripping into glitched out twisted tunes.
