Is it getting funky in here or is it just me? I feel like we’ve had a massive influx of consistently awesome new music recently, which is just about the best problem one could ask for. We definitely owe a lot of thanks to Philos Records for providing a steady stream of groovy beats, many of which feature a live instrumentation element. The new kids on the block for the forward-thinking label are Funkstatik, a Nebraska duo comprised of two drummers slash producers. Both members have their own solo projects- Rygol and boBbTracks– but together these guys are a force to be reckoned with. Sharing the same instrument of choice, Funkstatik’s live sets consist of constant trade-offs between the decks and the drum kit, keeping the performance ever full of life. After a few remixes and singles, Funkstatik is finally ready to hit us with their debut album. That’s What the World Is Today is crammed with relentlessly funky bass-lines, a heavy dose of soulful vocal sampling, and those organic drums that just can’t be imitated by a computer.
