Great drums make for a great beat; and a great beat makes for a great track. After sitting in with the destructive drum & bass group Pendulum, Seattle based drummer and producer KJ Sawka has more recently been the thumping force behind Destroid‘s enthralling drum patterns. He has also been a long time solo producer, twisting his own organic drum techniques together with face-melting bass production.
In light of his own attraction to production, Sawka recently held an open contest to producers. Sawka designed his own drum pack, which he then released as a free download. Artists were then able to download the pack to construct their own track. In the end, over 50 producers had contributed entries, and only three were selected as winners. You can read the official winner announcement on Sawka’s website, HERE.
First place went to Brooklyn’s Nukage, with Belgium-based System53 coming in second. However, the real stand out seemed to be Philadelphia’s own, the Architekt. Having built an immense arsenal of tunes and experience over his career here in Philadelphia, Michael Pipitone (aka Architekt) has been making tremendous strides in the bass scene as of late. Having emerged through warehouse parties and smaller parties, the Architekt name has grown to a steadily recognized name, and not just in our own home city. He will be performing alongside Bro Safari and MUST DIE! at the Electric Factory on September 20th, and has shared the stage with many insane dancefloor destroyers, including Zeds Dead and Zomboy. Architekt live sets are also now accompanied by his new, The Blue Print stage production.
The local producer and DJ recently took the stage at Moonrise Festival in Baltimore, Maryland, where he massacred the audience with an insane overload of bass-backed smashers. After checking out Architekt’s “Bass Genocide”- his award-winning track for Sawka’s contest- you can also hear his destructive set from the festival, as well as grab it as a FREE download.
