It’s that time of year again. With his fall tour, which will showcase the new TERRORVISION visual system, about to be underway, Figure is back with the newest installment in his Monsters series. The new album, “Monsters Vol. 5”, once again delivers a series of chilling bass tunes. The horror flavor is always particularly woven into the Monsters albums, a combination of classic horror samples, haunting melodies, and diabolical bass drops.
The album retrieves a wicked selection samples from new horror favorites, including “House on Haunted Hill”, “Nightmare on Elm Street”, “Friday the 13th”, “Evil Dead”, “It”, “Creature from the Black Lagoon”, and “Pumpkinhead”. Josh Gard’s (Figure) own horror inspirations show through in his original sound design as well. The tracks frequently introduce dark, atmospheric, haunting introductions, leading into climaxes of bass chaos that match the intensity of their corresponding films.
A true master of the music trade, Figure’s career has carried the producer through a variety of genres and styles. With origins in hip-hop, the Indiana producer has produced plenty of electro work and dubstep, before helping in paving the way for the drumstep sound. The new “Monsters Vol. 5” showcases the most versatile collection of bass genres thus far in any Monsters release. The album’s tracks dive in and out of electro, dubstep, drum & bass, and drumstep.
As always, Figure’s uncanny ability to change up track’s BPM speeds mid-song shines through here once again. The tracks find constant development as they progress through versatile drops, often showcasing various genres in a single track.
The sound design on the album is a combination of classic Figure sounds newly introduced in original arrangements, as well as some completely fresh new noise on a few of the tracks. “Freddy Krueger”, “Pennywise” and “Creature from the Black Lagoon” all introduce completely new grotesque sounds.
The album also features an impressive assortment on guest artists, from producers to vocalists. Long time collaborator with Figure, hip-hop vocalist Cas One makes an appearance on two tracks: “House on Haunted Hill” and “Pennywise”. Dirty Deeds, who also collaborated on “The Blob” with Figure on the last Monsters installment, appears once again on “Creature from the Black Lagoon”.
Figure’s new TERRORVISION Fall Tour kicks off this Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. You can catch him alongside Space Laces at SoundGarden Hall on Friday, October 24th, and at Nightmare Festival 2014 in Darlington, Maryland on Friday, October 31st- aka Halloween aaka the best possible day to see Figure.
