Things always get pretty weird when VibeSquaD steps up to the plate, be it in the studio or on the stage. The Colorado producer, some may not know, is actually a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. As a result, Aaron Holstein, a.k.a. VibeSquaD has spread his unique, convoluted sound throughout various styles of electronic music. Whether it’s the VibeSquaD solo project, or working with Michael Travis (String Cheese Incident/EOTO) and Jamie Janover in the collaborative Zilla project, Holstein’s glitchy, dark take on production always manages to shine through in a brilliantly original fashion.
Just in time for the holidays, we have the latest album from VibeSquaD, Lines and Planes. Being the wonderful and grateful artist he is, Holstein is giving away the entire album FREE through his bandcamp. Overall, the album takes a subtle step back from VibeSquaD’s last album release, Spinning Gears and Making Things, which was released in the Fall of last year. Lines and Planes still recalls plenty of peculiar tempos and drum rhythms, a staple of the VibeSquaD project. However, the sound design for Lines and Planes focuses much more on instrumental and ambient aspects, rather than the crunchy bass of Spinning Gears and Making Things. Instead, here VibeSquaD layers together funky grooves and atmospheric moments that seem to possess both volume and space simply through sound alone.
