Producers and DJs weren’t the only ones giving out FREE treats for the holidays. In fact, far from it. Baltimore based group Pigeons Playing Ping Pong further contributed to the holiday gift-giving with a full stream and download of their recent performance at Zydeco in Birmingham, Alabama at the beginning of December.
The entire set captures this funky flock’s blissful energy start to finish. Right from the opening song, “Live It Up”, these Pigeon’s irresistibly groovy sound rides in seemingly effortlessly. Lead vocalist Greg Ormont introduces the group in a fully goofy fashion, immediately after slamming the band into a seemingly never-ending force of crunchy guitar, diminishing bass lines, loose and fluid drumming, and minimal but effectively calculated electronic contributions.
The set is definitely best enjoyed in a single serving. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong ceaselessly continues to fly upward as the set escalates and the band really begins to sink their teeth further into their abstract funk grooves, transitioning between songs flawlessly. However, if you don’t have over two full hours of time to devote to this single set, there’s plenty of individualized awesomeness crammed into each and every jam. There’s really no going wrong. It’s truly an impeccable selection on Pigeons Playing Ping Pong’s part, exemplifying some of the most musical prowess from the band thus far in their time together. This only goes to show how far a group of musicians consistently playing alongside one another can rapidly develop synchronicity and understanding between band members.
