Unfortunately about a week ago we received the unfortunate news that Canadian group Modest Mouse‘s new album would be pushed back a few weeks to a new March 17th release date. There was a flip-side of positivism to that news though, which was the promise of a new single from the upcoming album, Strangers to Ourselves, soon on its way. After a Reddit post from the band themselves yesterday, the group unveiled “The Ground Walks, With Time in a Box”, the single, as promised.
The single has a very poppy feel at first. Much more so than any long-time listener of the band would expect, but Isaac’s protruding quirky voice still manages to keep the song on beat. Coming in at over six minutes, the single allows itself plenty of time for progression however. After a soaring guitar solo, the song explodes into a mess of experimental sound before settling down on to a thumping beat that catches a returning, and now drifting guitar line. Ah yes, this is the Modest Mouse we know and love.
