Philadelphia has been showing some real hunger for intelligently approached electronic compositions lately. The city has had a consistent pull for plenty of the expected big-name headliners making their annual rounds, but more recently it seems its local producers are fighting for a little more with their music. One musician furthering the cause is definitely local producer samwas, who is ceaselessly working to introduce new ideas and sounds to the music world and Philadelphia community in particular.
samwas kicks off his latest single, “Dreamin'”, with a head-sway inducing guitar line, quickly covered by thickly organic, tribal-inspired percussion and an angelically fluttering flute sample. Of course, it is not long before the sub-layers of slippery bass begin flowing from speaker to speaker, taking steps to fully engulf the listener with their fluidity. All these components begin to bounce in and out of existence as the progression continues to build. After disappearing for a few measures, the guitar returns and begins to garner some serious traction as it ascends the steadily jostling treble ranges. There is a lot going on in a structure that is far from simple, and certainly not repetitive. Yet, the track never hits an overcrowded state, maintaining a relaxed and welcoming vibe.
