Sam Eckstein has his fingers dipped in music from a multitude of perspectives. The New York musician is perhaps best known for his role in the electronica hip hop group, Technicolor Lenses. But equally on the rise is Eckstein’s solo production project, Esseks.
The Brooklyn producer has put out collaborative albums with Space Jesus on Gravitas Recordings (Dopplebangers), and Dailon on Gladkill & Sugarpill‘s Foundation Recordings (Constant Contrast – Volume I) within the past three months. Yet, he’s already back with another release. The new single, Spades, sheds some light on Eckstein’s hip hop production background. Whereas his Gravitas and Foundations releases took a deep step into dance-driven, psychedelic bass music, “Spades” pays heavier tribute to structured, concise beats.
Out now on Smokers Cough, the single is comprised of its title track, a reprise, a b-side, and two instrumental versions. Still implementing plenty of voluminous bass, the synthesizer work is more minimal and relatively absent compared to other releases. Instead, these tracks are carried forward by their vocal components, as the single features GDP, Tame One, TMFSE and Larry Lunchbox.
