This certainly wasn’t the most predictable collaboration, but often times that aspect can be the most beneficial. For Big Boi and Phantogram‘s new Big Grams EP the benefit is clear. Two brilliantly talented musical acts, with vastly differing sounds together in the studio. The result is a streamline of haunting, airy productions, protruding with the purposefully pretentious rhymes of Atlanta’s finest: Big Boi. While Big Boi saw his fair share of soul tunes to fruition during his time in Outkast, the Big Grams EP brings whole new meaning to such an idea. Glazed in apparent minimal indietronica vibes, the EP still finds plenty of moments to flash its southern swag. From pieces resembling that of Purity Ring and other emerging “witch house”, or “dark wave” (I’m really not trying to sound pretentious with these genres name) acts, to others digging hard into crunchy funk grooves, this new record tip-toes its way through any lopsided characteristics with perfect finesse.
